“The Carver Way” Building a Culture of High Expectations

Carver Rd. Middle has been an operational PBIS school for 13 years, and through the years we have had to evolve our program to better serve the needs of our students. To increase commitment to the process, we have found several ways to engage students at every level of support. We have found ways to empower students at every tier of PBIS by expecting accountability with both behavior and academics. We believe PBIS is crucial to the culture of the school, and we are proud of the success we have seen. From decreasing our behavior referrals and instructional time missed, increasing student achievement and growth historically, to our five-star climate rating, we have begun to see the results of the hard work being put in. We would like to share the strategies, tools, and processes we have implemented at every level of support. Specific strategies that we have implemented include Low-Level referral process, PBIS rewards with redemption days and drawings, reconciliation opportunities, Carver Academy, social-emotional learning check-in/check-out, and small groups. As we evolve our PBIS program, we are making changes and adjusting our focus to include the Ron Clark House System and restorative practices such as restorative circles and informal conferences. We have a goal to become a PBIS distinguished school, and have been working with the PBIS team to meet that goal. We would love to be able to share our PBIS program with other schools on the same journey
